01 / Context

APEX STUDENT is an AI scheduling app for students. I came in when it was a product with no brand: no site, no visual language, no personality. This is the project where I owned the whole surface, everything a user sees before they trust the app enough to hand it their calendar.

02 / The Problem

Productivity tools for students face a paradox: students need structure and resent being told to have it. A scheduling app that markets like a productivity guru gets ignored; one that's too playful doesn't get trusted with your semester. Apex needed to feel like relief, not homework.

03 / The Thinking

The bet: give the AI a personality instead of an interface. Scheduling is stressful. A system is cold, but a character is company.

That's LOLA. Not a decoration, a strategic decision. LOLA lets Apex say things a SaaS brand can't ("you scheduled 4 hours of 'grind time' and opened TikTok, be serious"). She makes the AI feel like a companion instead of surveillance, and she gives every surface a consistent narrator, from onboarding to empty states to social.

04 / The Work

Brand system

Logo, color, type, and voice, built around one idea: calm structure, warm voice. And a face to carry it, LOLA, the study companion at the center of the whole system.

LOLA

Character direction: personality spec, tone rules, and a full expression set, so LOLA can react across the product with a consistent voice. And a note on where LOLA deliberately doesn't appear. Nobody wants a mascot in a billing screen or an error state.

Product UI

The app itself, designed end-to-end: today view, calendar, the LOLA chat, the efficiency map, the weekly plan, and the menu. A narrative that moves from problem to relief to proof, kept consistent from marketing into the product.

Social content

A content system where LOLA carries the feed: a consistent card format that turns each app value, clarity, balance, performance, into a shareable slide.

Onboarding

A first-run experience designed as a moment with LOLA rather than a form. The brand promise kept inside the product, from the loading screen on.

Killed Direction

We started as a very generic calendar app, the kind no one would actually use. We killed it. What we're building now is encouragement and directed motivation: an app that helps you maximize your day and stop scrolling, not just another grid to ignore.

05 / Results

APEX is still pre-launch: no downloads yet, because there's nothing to download yet. But the brand is already working. The complete system, site, character, and content engine, is built, and LOLA-led content consistently outperforms everything without her.

06 / What I'd Do Next

Push LOLA into retention: streak moments, semester-recap content ("LOLA wrapped"), and a TikTok presence where the character posts, not the company.
